Strategies for Managing Spreadmarts: Migrating to a Managed BI Environment
Does your firm struggle with spreadmarts? In organizations all over the world, business people bypass their IT groups to get data from spreadmarts. Spreadmarts are data shadow systems in which individuals collect and massage data on an ongoing basis to support their information requirements or those of their immediate workgroup. These shadow systems, which are usually built on spreadsheets, exist outside of approved, IT-managed corporate data repositories, such as data warehouses, data marts, or ERP systems, and contain data and logic that often conflict with corporate data. Once created, these systems spread throughout an organization like pernicious vines, strangling any chance for information consistency and reliability. You'll find them in all industries, supporting all business functions. According to TDWI Research, more than 90% of all organizations have spreadmarts.

Market Overview: Open Source ETL Tools An Attractive Alternative To Custom Code
A Forrester Research Report by Rob Karel and Michael Goulde with Mike Gilpin and Norman Nicolson November 6, 2007
As open source, community-driven software continues its evolution from an interesting experiment to a viable technology alternative for enterprises, additional market segments develop open-source alternatives. The latest segment in the trend is open source extract, transform, and load (ETL) data integration. While the vendors and projects leading the way in this emerging market have their sights set on creating an alternative to commercially available packaged solutions, expect early adopters to be independent software vendors (ISVs) and systems integrators (SIs), as well as end users in both midmarket and enterprise-sized organizations that are looking for a more productive and efficient alternative to writing custom code.
BI & Performance Management for Midsized Companies

Now, midmarket companies can now take advantage of BI tools tailored to the size of their organization. These tools give them increased visibility into their operations and this information can be effectively distributed to all key stakeholders. In this panel discussion, moderator Mark Smith, CEO of Ventana Research, will be joined by Caroline Seymour, AVP, Cognos; Dick Kuiper, Sr. Business Consultant for Lawson; John Kale, LogiXML's VP of Marketing and Lance Walter, VP of Marketing, Pentaho, for an informative discussion of how BI can be a critical component of growth for any size organization.

Strategies for Managing Spreadmarts: Migrating to a Managed Bi Environment
One of the most insidious problems in data warehousing is the proliferation of spreadmarts---spreadsheets and Access databases that masquerade as data marts. This webinar will show how spreadmarts are a symptom of a larger problem and then outline strategies for migrating organizations to a managed BI environment that delivers a single version of truth. The event will be hosted by Wayne Eckerson, Director, TDWI Research.
