Leading Dental Benefits Provider Adopts Commercial Open Source Alternative for Business Intelligence
Orlando FL. - June 4, 2008 - Pentaho Corporation, the commercial open source alternative for business intelligence (BI), today announced that Delta Dental of
Virginia (DDVA) has deployed the ETL and reporting components of Pentaho Open BI Suite to support the next phase of the organization's phenomenal growth.
Since 1964, DDVA has provided its members outstanding access to innovative, high-quality benefit programs. From their humble beginnings with two employees operating
out of a home basement to a thriving organization with over 200 employees today, their focus has remained uncompromised: To improve the public's health through market
leadership as the dental experts by delivering quality dental benefits and superior service supported by evidence-based science and innovative technology.
DDVA developed a very successful dental carrier enterprise solution, DCS2000®. However, with the real-time nature of the transactional system, data
volatility does not facilitate the historical reporting required to identify and capitalize on new business. In just over 40 years, DDVA has reached $320
million in annual revenues and wanted to harness critical corporate information from DCS2000® to optimize the business going forward.
Delta Dental determined that they could achieve their business goals more quickly while reducing costs by using the Pentaho Open BI Suite with subscription
services. They were able to deliver business benefits in Phase 1 of their project with Pentaho in only four months. DDVA tapped the technology and business
expertise of OpenBI LLC, a Pentaho Systems Integrator Partner, to quickly understand their needs and apply Pentaho's best-in-class solutions to the business
problem.
"IT organizations are under increasing pressure to deliver results on-time and under-budget," said Mark Smith, CEO and EVP of Research at Ventana Research
"Organizations can not wait for future releases or new product roadmaps to materialize from industry consolidation in the BI market, and low-risk alternatives
like Pentaho are a cost-effective path to rapidly gaining value from BI."
The Pentaho-based application provides web-based historical reporting to DDVA's clients, facilitating their access to summary claims information, claims expense,
network utilization, dentist payments, and enrollment data. The system runs on an Oracle Linux server with a JBoss Application Server and an Oracle 10g Database.
"We chose Pentaho for its capabilities, value, and services, as well as the expertise of the OpenBI team," said John Sheffield, Director of IS Development at
Delta Dental of Virginia. "Pentaho stood toe-to-toe with the other vendors and demonstrated the ability to deliver the solution more quickly and more cost-effectively,
with the safety and security of working with a market leader."
