Examples Include 800 Million Record Queries, 600 Dimensions, 50 New GB Per Day & More
San Francisco, CA., March 26 – Open Source Business Conference, the commercial open source alternative for business intelligence, today announced a
collection of production customer applications that prove the real-world scalability of Pentaho's best-in-class open source BI
technology. For large user volumes, data volumes, or applications analyzing lots of large dimensions, Pentaho customers have set
the bar for large-scale open source BI scalability in real production environments.
Frontier Airlines, a major North American airline, uses Pentaho's open source OLAP technology to analyze more than
four years of ticket sales information stored at the individual ticket level. The interactive OLAP application runs on
a four-server clustered Greenplum database, with interactive analytical queries spanning more than 800 million ticket records
consistently returning in a few seconds, with even the longest queries completing in less than 15 seconds.
A leading provider of decision support solutions that help healthcare organizations improve clinical and business
performance delivers sophisticated analytics to hospitals by embedding Pentaho Analysis Services. These sophisticated,
large-scale applications typically have more than 600 dimensions and 3000 individual measures. The largest of dimensions
have tens of thousands of individual members, allowing for fine-grained analysis at a level of dimensionality rare among
OLAP applications, and supported by fact tables with hundreds of millions of rows of data.
Flemish Traffic Center, a Belgian government agency, analyzes traffic patterns by gathering traffic flow data every
minute from more than 500 traffic sensors distributed across the country. Pentaho Data Integration runs on a four-CPU Sun
UltraSPARC server, adding more than two million rows a day to a warehouse whose largest fact table contains nearly three
billion records.
A major U.S.-based travel services provider supports more than 3,000 interactive users in an extranet travel agent
portal that uses Pentaho Reporting to provide self-service BI capabilities. Users can access information interactively
through the portal, as well as schedule regular e-mail delivery of key reports. This large community of interactive users
is supported on a single four-CPU reporting machine running against a large Teradata data warehouse.
Accor Hotels, the leading European hotel group with more than 4,000 hotels in nearly 100 countries, uses applications
based on Pentaho open source OLAP technology as part of managing its operations in Europe. The three key OLAP applications
use database fact tables ranging from 5 million to 25 million rows. The company maintains the data warehouse using Pentaho
Data Integration, adding between 40 and 50 gigabytes of information a day to the data warehouse. Pentaho Data Integration
runs multiple extract, transform and load (ETL) jobs in parallel on a Sun UltraSPARC server. The application was implemented
by Sitel France (www.sitel.fr).
"Our research has shown strong adoption of open source business intelligence in organizations of all sizes," said David
Stodder, president and research director at industry analyst firm Ventana Research. "Open source solutions like Pentaho
hold the potential for dramatic cost savings in BI, and proven success in large deployments should help drive even faster
adoption among enterprises."
Pentaho leads and sponsors many popular open source BI projects that are included or embedded in offerings from Jaspersoft,
Savvion, Spidex Software, Uniloc and many more. The modular, standards-based architecture of Pentaho's BI modules makes it
easy for third parties to embed best-in-class BI technology at far lower costs than traditional proprietary BI offerings.
A new whitepaper describing the performance and scalability of Pentaho's platform architecture, with detailed results, is
available at www.pentaho.com/scalability/. The test results demonstrate linear scalability for the Pentaho BI Platform
deployed in a modern, cost-effective "scale-out" architecture that takes advantage of the processing capabilities of multiple,
inexpensive server machines configured in a cluster.
"If you're talking about large-scale open source BI in the real world, you're talking about Pentaho," said Richard Daley,
CEO of Pentaho. "Our users and customers have proven that Pentaho is a compelling alternative to traditional proprietary BI,
especially for large-scale and complex BI applications where Pentaho has such a huge advantage in total cost of ownership."
