German Pentaho User Meeting 2017 (#PUM17) showcases highly innovative use cases
Now in its fourth year, the Pentaho User Meeting (PUM), organized by our German partner it-novum, attracted 130 attendees. Of the 13 presentations, six were use cases, half of which were about companies that have embedded Pentaho. This confirms the trend we are seeing of more organisations embedding analytics into their day-to-day applications ‘at the point of impact’. All the projects presented at PUM17 used CTools for custom data visualizations.
The presentations spanned a wide range of use cases and industries: The German Federal Police, STIWA (a leading company in the field of product and high-performance automation), Bosch Service Solutions, Eurofunk Kappacher GmbH (specialist emergency call centres), Compex Systemhaus GmbH (software house) and Swissport (aviation and ground handling).
Germany’s Federal Police: insights now just a few clicks away
Michael Becker and Henry Liebrenz presented on how Germany’s Federal Police is using Pentaho. Previously, it manually collected incoming statistics data using 72 Excel sheets, which took more than a month to prepare and make available to official authorities. This made it very difficult to respond to the four information requests per day (on average) it was getting from the parliament, interior ministry, police headquarters, EU or Frontex, the Federal Police and other authorities. It needed a more efficient way, not only to deal with the requests, but ensure data accuracy. Michael Becker gave the example of needing to respond to a parliamentary question on how many people of a certain nationality have entered Germany in a certain time frame. Before using Pentaho it took up to 13 people manually collecting the data and entering it into Excel. Today it the answer is just a few clicks away. STIWA: an exciting Industry 4.0 use case
Alexander Meisinger and Werner Fragner of the STIWA Group presented on how they embedded Pentaho to help identify problems in production facilities down to the component level. Nowadays, most production facilities collect data from their components but this data is not easily accessible. To solve this and optimize the facilities, STIWA has developed analytics software based on Pentaho called AMS Analysis-CI that collects, processes, links and analyzes all signals and data from the facilities. As a result, the ramp-up time for a new facility can be reduced by 30 percent. Technicians and logistics people can also use the system for ad hoc analysis, drilling down and identifying root problems. Visualizations enable STIWA to merge plant engineering and plant operations view and gather a complete picture for analysis. More details (in German) how STIWA uses Pentaho can be found here.
Bosch: reporting for 1500 customer projects
Rolf Petry explained how Bosch Service Solutions uses Pentaho for reporting on its customer projects globally. The company has to process and blend data from different internal sources including phone systems, time recording systems, e-mail, SAP HR data and external customer data. A key reason Bosch chose Pentaho was its ability to process and blend many different data sources easily. This has made it possible to offer self-service, secure reports on detailed KPIs including received calls, answered calls, ‘hang-ups’, costs and benefits. Bosch also chose Pentaho for cost efficiency, open standards and the fact that Pentaho has been used in other departments in the company. Eurofunk: embedding Pentaho in “mission control” software to optimize emergency services
Christian Repaski and Molham Rajjo from the Austrian family business Eurofunk Kappacher GmbH presented on how their company embedded Pentaho into its “mission control” software used by fire departments and police and rescue services to optimize emergency services. Services not only have a legal obligation to respond to an emergency call and arrive at the scene within a set time, but a fast response can also save lives. Eurofunk customers access Pentaho through a web browser to analyze and report on things like how long it takes to answer emergency calls, how long it takes after the call to arrive at the scene of incident, types of incidents and the number of incidents not responded to on time. Among the reasons Eurofunk chose Pentaho was for its ability to integrate with its customers’ maps data and Google Maps. In the future Eurofunk plans to use predictive analytics to help the emergency services further improve their mission forces. Compex: creating web applications with Mondrian functionality in five minutes
Christophe Loetz, General Manager at Compex Systemhaus GmbH, showcased the integrated development environment OS.bee, currently published as open source project OSBP by the Eclipse Foundation. OS.bee is a unique business engineering environment that includes several domain specific languages and a technology stack that includes more than 30 frameworks. It embeds Mondrian as an OLAP engine to enable OS.bee applications to use analytics for multidimensional data requests in real-time. Christophe Loetz demo-ed how to use OS.bee to automatically turn an Excel sheet into a web application with Mondrian reporting capabilities in 5 minutes or less. Swissport: business rules engine for simplified ETL
Uwe Geerken from the global aviation and ground services company Swissport presented a plugin he developed for Pentaho. The plugin is a business rules engine that simplifies ETL by enabling IT and business groups to work independently on their own processes and responsibilities. In response to the strong interest by the audience, Uwe spontaneously gave a short workshop after the meeting. The PUM17 presentations clearly demonstrated that easy to use data integration is increasingly important for companies, along with self-service analytics and data preparation.
